Sexual Orientation? Yes, please!

While filling out a health form today, I was asked about my sexual orientation. The choices included Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual, Transgender, and “I’m not sure”.

I picked “I’m not sure”. Why tie yourself down when options are offered?

Remember, we are all created different…AND EQUAL!

From Soulforce:

Transgender Day of Remembrance

Tuesday, November 20th, is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Soulforce invites you to pause and remember those who have lost their lives as a result of anti-trans violence. We grieve for the following transgender people who were killed this year simply because of their gender identity and expression:
Nakia Ladelle Baker
Keittiral Langnaura
Moira Donaire
Michelle Carrasco “Chlea”
Ruby Rodriguez
Erica Keel
Bret T. Turner
Victoria Arellano
Oscar Mosqueda

At least one transgender person loses their life each month because of social prejudice and religion-based bigotry. Despite being the target of immense hatred and intolerance, transgender people have often been the first to take a stand for social justice during our movement’s struggle for equality and liberation. As we grieve, we also honor the leadership, bravery and passion of the transgender community, and work to transform our mourning into a steadfast determination to speak out, stand up, and resist injustice.

  1. In addition to memorializing the people lost to senseless hate and violence, I would like to honor the women and men who courageously live their lives in truth everyday.

It makes me so angry that much of the hate and degredation against the GLBT community is embraced by religion!

Everyone in our community should know that there’s a documentary film soon to be released about two lesbian women who set out to fight against religious bigotry by posing as a straight couple in an evangelical church… and they have proof.

You can see Faith of the Abomination movie trailer on YouTube, or go directly to FaithoftheAbomination.com

  2. Thanks for the info, Trist. Peace and Power to us all.

  3. Hi there! stumbled in from wordpress.com.

Just wanted to point out that saying that “hate … is embraced by religion” is to assume that everyone “in religion” has the same ideas. There are some religious people who are anxious to stone/behead/harangue/whatever people for who they’d like to go to bed with. There are many more who _aren’t_ violent, or even particularly prejudiced against those in “your community” - and that includes even the ones who disapprove of homosexual behavior.

Turn it around - do you like it when people suggest that all homosexual men are swishy limp-wristed sissies? or that all lesbians are butch man-haters with crewcuts? It’s equally incorrect to suggest that “religion embraces hate”.

    Dare I say… not all bigotry is “religion-based”? :)

(Before you flame me, you might want to read my own site to see that I’m not exactly a run-of-the-mill fundie gay-basher. Offensive stereotypes provided for purposes of illustration only.)

  4. Fair point, May! I think its just especially hurtful when ANY type of misleading, misaligned sentiment comes from religious communities, places that many of us were led to believe were the height of love and inclusiveness.
We all know it can come from anywhere, anytime, in myriad forms.
BTW, a good place to bring this debate is most definitely http://www.Soulforce.org. Their site is very provocative and interesting.

(Although GBLT justice is a very important issue to me, this blog is mostly about art and me whining about my various athletic injuries, so its not exactly the hub of the circle ;) )
